The traveler’s map of San Pedro de Atacama
Every service you actually need on the ground: where to sleep, where the ATMs are, the posta de salud, the Carabineros station, the only fuel station, the bus terminal and the landmarks. Every place has its own page with coordinates, nearby services and one-tap saving — open any pin from the list. Turn on your location to see real distances, and call 133/131 in an emergency.

Places list
Calle Gustavo Le Paige, a 2 cuadras de la plaza
Primary care and 24/7 emergency stabilization. Serious cases are stabilized here and transferred to Calama by ambulance (131). Bring your passport and travel insurance details.
Vilama 425, esquina de la plaza
The pharmacy on the corner by the square: painkillers, rehydration salts, sunscreen, motion-sickness pills, and the coca tea and sorojchi pills sold locally. Google Maps rates it 4.3 from 23 reviews. Stock is small and hours irregular — bring prescription meds from home.
Esquina Caracoles / Toconao 359
The chain pharmacy, a block from the square: the safer bet for anything the local pharmacy does not stock. Google Maps rates it 3.5 from 129 reviews — the rating is low, the range is not.
Calle Caracoles, frente a la plaza
The main bank ATM cluster — and the one most likely to run dry on weekends and holidays. Withdraw CLP in the morning; card fees apply per withdrawal, not a %.
Calle Toqui, a un costado de la plaza
Free official maps, current road status (which attractions are closed after rain), and licensed-guide lists. The best source for "is the Tara road open today?" before you book.
Centro, cerca de la plaza
Park service office for the national reserve (Valle de la Luna, Chaxa, Tara, Miscanti). Confirms entry fees, trail openings and conservation rules — useful if you are self-guiding.
Plaza de Armas, tardes
Artisan market that fills the plaza edge every afternoon: coca leaves, alpaca knitwear, ceramics. Cash only in most stalls; bargain lightly — prices are fair by Chilean standards.
Calle Caracoles
Long-standing sit-down restaurant — the widest menu in town (meat, trout, vegetarian, Chilean wine by the glass). Good refuge on cold nights; mid-range prices.
Caracoles 330, centro
The square the town is built around, with the church on one side and the artisan market along the edges in the afternoon. Google Maps rates it 4.7 from 7,629 reviews — the most reviewed place in San Pedro.
Caracoles 362, junto a la plaza
Adobe church and National Monument — the current building dates from 1744 with a cedar-and-cactus-wood roof. Step inside during the late afternoon light; it is the town's soul. Google Maps rates it 4.7 from 2,739 reviews.
Calle Gustavo Le Paige, junto a la plaza
Atacameñian archaeology: mummies, textiles and the famous snuff tablets. Closed for a major remodel in recent years — check the reopening status at the tourist office next door.
Calle Caracoles (segunda cuadra)
Independent ATM network — works when BancoEstado does not, but charges a higher fixed fee per withdrawal. Useful backup, not the first choice.
Calle Caracoles / Toqui, centro
Cash exchange for USD/EUR/BRL to CLP. Rates are noticeably worse than city banks — change only what you need for entry fees and markets; cards work almost everywhere in town.
Calle Caracoles
Water, snacks, sunscreen and sandwiches for tour days. Several minimarkets share this block — compare prices, the differences are real. Stock up the night before early departures.
Caracoles esq. Tocopilla
The classic adobe dining hall with a fireplace and live Andean music most nights. Book at dusk in high season; the lamb and quinoa dishes are the reason people queue.
Calle Caracoles
Grill house — meat-heavy menu, generous portions after a day of altitude. Arrive before 21:00 or expect a wait.
Calle Caracoles
Bakery-emporio famous for empanadas, quiche and natural juices — the budget breakfast and pre-tour lunch stop. Opens early, sells out by mid-afternoon.
Calle Caracoles, centro
Tiny counter famous for oven-fresh empanadas — the quick, cheap lunch between tours. Lines at midday move fast; cash is always welcome.
🛏️Awasi Atacama
$$$$Calle Toqui
Relais & Châteaux, 12 rooms, fully all-inclusive with private guide and 4x4 per room. The top-end Splurge — book months ahead.
Camino al Pukará, borde del pueblo
Design hotel on the town edge with pool and spa views of the cordillera. All-inclusive or room-only rates; 5 minutes on foot to the plaza.
Calle Toqui, a 3 cuadras de la plaza
Police station for incidents, theft reports (needed for insurance) and lost property. Officers speak little English — a hotel staffer can help translate. Emergency line: 133.
🍽️Todo Natural
$Calle Vilama / Caracoles
Juices, smoothies, vegan plates and the best cheap fruit salad in the desert. Solid pick if altitude has your stomach in protest mode.
Calle Caracoles, la calle principal
The main street: almost every restaurant, travel agency and shop in town is on it, and the plaza is at the north end. Start the walk here.
🛏️Hotel Terrantai
$$$Calle Tocopilla, junto a la iglesia
Adobe boutique hotel right in the center — walkable to everything. Breakfast with local ingredients; one of the best town-center locations.
🛏️Hotel Kimal
$$Calle Toqui
Boutique adobe hotel two blocks from the plaza — honest 3-star comfort, courtyard pool, very central without being noisy.
Calle Jerónimo de Almagro, entrada sur del pueblo
Buses to Calama (~2 h, ~CLP 3.500–5.000, several daily) plus long-haul to Salta and Jujuy (Argentina) and Antofagasta. Buy tickets a day ahead in high season; no online seat picks.
🍽️Ckunna
$$Caracoles 101
Andean grill with a patio worth booking: local meats, llama medallions and a house pisco sour. Google Maps rates it 4.6 from 831 reviews — the most reviewed of the restaurants the town is known for. Book ahead in high season.
Tocopilla 201
Meteorites that fell in the Atacama, collected in town. The driest desert on earth is where fragments survive that would have burned up anywhere else. Google Maps rates it 4.6 from 1,873 reviews.
🛏️NOI Casa Atacama
$$$Ayllu de Larache
Serene 20-room hotel in the Larache ayllu — minimalist adobe architecture, pool, quiet gardens. Half-board options; good luxury-for-value balance.
Calle Nantaranza, zona Caracoles
Backpacker institution: dorms and privates, kitchen, tour-desk and gear storage. Book ahead — the dorms fill first in high season.
Calle Tocopilla, salida sur
Garden hotel with comfortable rooms and a pool — the dependable mid-range pick 5 minutes from the center.
Ruta 23 / salida norte hacia Calama
The one and only fuel station in town. Fill up before any self-drive day (Tatio, Tara, Uyuni border). There is no fuel on the geyser route or past Socaire — a full tank is the difference between a detour and a tow.
Quebrada del Pukará, a 10 min a pie del centro
42-room lodge in the Pukará valley with six pools and a planetarium-style astronomy program. Quietest luxury location — zero street noise.
Camino a Coya Canturi, entrada este
Large resort-style property: pools, spa, spacious rooms, family-friendly. Slightly outside the center — plan on 5 minutes by car or 15 on foot.
🛏️explora Atacama
$$$$Ayllu de Larache, Camino a Quitor
The pioneer lodge: all-inclusive with 50+ guided excursions, horse stables and its own Atacameñian archaeological parcel. Reference standard for guided programs.
Ruta 27 toward Argentina, ~10 km northeast of San Pedro
Wind-carved red-rock corridors with the tiny San Juan Bautista adobe church and old salt-mine tunnels. Free access — short hikes, picnic spots, and it pairs well with Pukará de Quitor.
Tulor, al sur de San Pedro
Stargazing tours under one of the clearest skies on the planet: telescopes pointed at the southern hemisphere, with the dry air doing the rest. It is a guided visit with a tour fee, not a walk-up observatory. Google Maps rates it 4.8 from 126 reviews.
Salar de Atacama edge, ~15 km south of San Pedro
Two round freshwater pools in the middle of the salt crust — a quick swim stop usually combined with Laguna Cejar or Baltinache. Cold, very buoyant water; bring a towel and sandals (the salt is sharp).
End of the salt-flat track, ~20 km southwest of San Pedro
Quiet lagoon at the southern edge of the salar — the local favorite for sunset without the Valle de la Luna crowds. Flamingos at dusk and mirror reflections; the access road is salt and sand.
Garganta del Río Grande, al este de San Pedro
A narrow canyon in the gorge that cuts east from town, with rock walls and a seasonal waterfall at the end of a short walk. It is not on the paved tourist loop: go with someone who knows the access. Google Maps rates it 4.8 from 624 reviews.
Ruta 23, km ~90 toward Salar de Tara / Argentina pass
Checkpoint on the high route. Self-drivers heading to Salar de Tara or the Sico pass may be asked for documents — carry passports and car papers. Also the informal "road open?" info point.
Ruta 5 / Calama — 97 km, 1h15–1h40 from San Pedro
The airport for San Pedro: flights to Santiago (mostly midday clusters). Shared transfers meet every flight (~CLP 12.000–15.000 pp); book the transfer when you book the flight.
Calama city center — ~95 km from San Pedro
The main bus terminal in Calama: connect here between the airport or a Calama hotel and the buses / shared transfers that run to San Pedro (~1h30–2 h). Departure points vary by operator — confirm yours when booking.
Av. Aníbal Pinto, Calama — ~95 km from San Pedro
The regional referral hospital with a full 24/7 emergency room, imaging and surgery. This is where high-altitude or trauma cases from San Pedro go — count on a 1h15 transfer.
Emergency & safety card
Carabineros (police)
133
Incidents, theft reports, road checkpoints.
Ambulancia (SAMU)
131
Medical emergency — dispatches from Calama for serious cases.
Bomberos (fire & rescue)
132
Fire and technical rescue.
- Save these numbers before you arrive — there is patchy signal on the high routes, so note them offline too.
- The Posta de Salud San Pedro stabilizes; the referral hospital with full ER is in Calama (~95 km, ~1h15 by ambulance).
- If you have travel insurance, call the insurer's assistance line first for private-care authorization — then go.
