Why travelers pick it
Awasi runs on a simple, brilliant premise: every room gets its own guide and 4x4, so your day is built around your interests and your pace — leave before dawn for the salt valleys via our Moon Valley guide logic without another van in frame, or sleep in and chase the light at 17:00. It is the most flexible way to see the desert, and the reason rates start near US$ 1,200 per night.
The physical lodge is intimate: twelve adobe rooms with private courtyards and outdoor showers, rooftop terraces with plunge pools, a wine cellar and a single dining room where menus change nightly. The Relais & Châteaux badge is deserved — the kitchen is among the best in the region.
It sits two blocks from the plaza, which sounds urban until you step inside the walled compound; the design deliberately shuts out the street. Adults and couples dominate the guest list — families with young kids fit better at Cumbres or Nayara.
Good to know
Noise: effectively none — thick adobe walls, a walled garden and a residential block keep rooms hushed despite the central address.
Heating: rooms heat quickly and bedding is serious; June–August pre-dawn departures (a specialty here) demand proper layers — your guide carries extra blankets.
Pool reality: plunge pools on the terraces plus a small outdoor pool — a cooling ritual, not a swimming-lodge setup; swimmers should look at Nayara or Cumbres.
Water & altitude: standard desert conservation; the kitchen happily builds lighter, hydration-friendly menus for guests adjusting to 2,450 m.
Layout: single-level rooms around a courtyard — no elevators, no long internal hikes, ten steps from room to dinner.
Booking tips
With 12 rooms, peak dates (December–February, July) sell out 4–6 months ahead; waitlists are real and do clear, so put your name down.
Rates are seasonal and include nearly everything — when comparing with other lodges, price the private guide and vehicle separately and the math looks very different.
Plan stay length against the seasons: the best-time guide explains how months change both excursions and rates.
Arrival via Calama takes about 1 h 15 min by road; the lodge coordinates transfers and times a soft first day around your landing.
