What to order
Why go
San Pedro's tourist menus on Caracoles start near CLP 10,000; two blocks away, the comedores around the bus terminal feed locals for half that. The formula never changes: soup, a main of chicken or beef with rice and salad, a glass of juice, occasionally dessert — written on cardboard signs in the doorway, refreshed daily.
The honest caveat: these are informal kitchens and their locations rotate from season to season, so no fixed address is reliable — walk the blocks around the terminal, read the handwritten menus and pick the fullest room (turnover equals freshness). For CLP 4,000–6,000 (≈ US$ 4–6) it is the anchor of our San Pedro budget guide, alongside El Cabo for cheap protein at dinner.
Good to know
Payment: cash, essentially always — bring small bills.
Hours: lunch only, roughly 12:30–15:30; kitchens close when the food runs out.
Rotation: locations move between seasons — the handwritten menu is the signal.
Spanish-only service in most rooms; pointing at the pot works.
