Why travelers pick it
The municipal campground is the floor of San Pedro's accommodation market: a site for roughly US$ 8–12 per person with shade ramadas, hot showers and a shared kitchen, ten minutes' walk from the plaza. It is basic, occasionally dusty and utterly functional — and the night sky above your tent is the same one paying guests see; our stargazing guide tells you what to look for.
For overlanders with campervans and cyclists with panniers it is the default: flat sites, a staffed entrance and markets for resupply within a short walk. Long-stay budget travelers use it as a base while picking tours day by day.
Good to know
Cold is the challenge: winter dawns near 0°C, summer nights surprisingly chilly — a bag rated to 0°C/-5°C and layers are non-negotiable; run the numbers on our budget page.
Water discipline: showers are hot but the desert is not — keep them short, and carry bottles you can refill.
Noise: a quiet-edge location, but you are camping — voices carry, and weekend groups can be lively until late.
Dust and wind: afternoon gusts funnel dust through camp; stake well and keep zips closed.
Facilities: maintained but basic — functional over pretty, and bring your own cooking kit beyond the shared stove basics.
Booking tips
Walk-in arrival is normal, but December–February and long weekends fill the shady sites first — arrive by mid-afternoon to choose.
Rates run about US$ 8–12 per person per night; cash is king and prices are posted at the entrance — verify on arrival, as municipal fees change.
If you want trees, a garden and slightly more comfort for a couple of dollars more, compare La Ruana before deciding.
